SOCIAL Security has become a source of irritation for many retirees.

The safety net program for retired Americans can cause trouble when it accidentally overpays benefits.

One Social Security user, Ellen, recently slammed the agency on Facebook.

She said they gave her a $914 overpayment notice.

She also claimed that this all happened as the Social Security Administration lowered her payment.

PAYMENT NOTICE

Ellen, who lives in Virginia, said that recently her Social Security benefits had been cut to less than $850.

Despite that, she's now being asked to repay $914.

Social Security pays out money to millions of Americans, and it doesn't always do so perfectly.

On occasion, the agency will realize it has been paying someone more than it deems fair.

That's when it sends a bill.

But this isn't Ellen's first run-in with SSA.

She says she took the agency to court over a past dispute.

"I've been fighting with Social Security for 30 years to comply with the judge's orders regarding my case with no success," she said.

"Social Security is out of control."

It's not clear exactly what the judge ruled in that case.

SSA did not publicly reply to Ellen's post.

MORE OVERPAYMENTS

Ellen is far from alone in facing SSA issues.

SSA has overpaid billions of dollars in recent years, and is legally required to get that cash back.

One man contacted the SSA directly on Facebook after being asked to repay money.

He said the administration needed to "correct" its "wrongs."

Some have received thousands in demands from Social Security.

A woman took to Facebook to call out a charge of over $4,000 from SSA.

She said it left her "broke."

Another man fumed that SSA "penalizes hard work."

A little-known rule cost one woman $111,384 of her benefits.
