RESIDENTS in a major US city are bracing for a parking enforcement blitz that could cost them $65 for a single misstep.

Parking ticket enforcement in San Francisco is set to dramatically increase in the coming days. Local officials said it will make sidewalks safer.

San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency, or the SFMTA, met last Tuesday to discuss violent traffic issues in the city.

Jeffrey Tumlin, the SFMTA Director, revealed an "intensive enforcement" sting aimed at making streets safer for pedestrians, according to SFGate.

Several city officials have complained about dozens of repeat parking issues they've witnessed throughout the city.

Erica Kato, a spokesperson for SFMTA, said police officers will assign more tickets to drivers parking too close to crosswalks, on sidewalks, and in bike lanes.

"Parking on and obstructing sidewalks has never been legal," Kato told the publication.

"We have listened to residents' and the city government's concerns about this issue."

The city is building back its enforcement arm after experiencing a dramatic decline in parking tickets during Covid-19 lockdowns.

San Francisco parking authorities assigned only 4,505 in 2020.

Parking tickets have increased to 101,001 during March alone, SFGate reported. That's a nearly 96% increase.

The number is still down from peak parking enforcement. The city assigned 115,672 citations in March 2019.

Parking tickets for all three offenses is $65, according to city law.

ROAD REFINE

San Francisco's city leaders have unveiled a spate of new road laws for pedestrian safety.

Around 200 new traffic lights will no longer allow right turns on red.

Signs warning against the driving maneuver popped up on street lights at the end of last month.

The traffic patterns will change in the neighborhoods of SoMa, Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, and the Financial District.

It is already illegal to turn on a red light in the Tenderloin.

The city is introducing new speed-capturing cameras across its roads.

"Creating safer streets starts with addressing speed, which is the largest cause of injury and death in traffic collisions," San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement.

"We fought for years to give our city this tool, and now that we have it, we are doing everything we can to get these cameras out on our streets as quickly as possible."

City officials launched a program called Vision Zero in 2014, hoping to curb all pedestrian road deaths by 2024.

However, 12 people have passed away in pedestrian-traffic collisions in San Francisco this year, SFGate reported.
