AN EDUCATOR was surprised when he was pulled over by the police who claimed his license was suspended though it was valid.

The University of Rochester professor practices safe driving and wasn't used to getting pulled over so he was particularly surprised when he was stopped with the threat of being arrested.

Daniel Beaumont was pulled over while driving home from the university earlier this month, WHEC-TV reported.

When he was stopped while on the cross-country drive home, the professor said that he was met by a Nebraska state trooper who provided him with information that he didn't understand.

"And he comes back and says to me, 'Your driver's license has been surrendered,' Beaumont recalled.

"I said, 'What does that mean?' And he explains it usually means you've got a driver's license in a new state."

That's when the law enforcement officer gave him a major warning.

"'You need to take care of this as soon as possible because you could be arrested,'" Beaumont said he was told.

When the professor looked into the situation by calling the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, things only got more peculiar.

The DMV explained to the driver that his license was suspended because he had another license in New Mexico.

Oddly enough, he stressed that he'd never gotten a driver's license in New Mexico.

He didn't have a driver's license there but it was found that he did have an old speeding ticket he was issued for speeding there.

The New York State DMV found that he did not surrender his license to New Mexico when he received the ticket.

There was an issue, but it wasn't a system problem.

"We restored his New York State driver's license," the office told WHEC-TV.

"And we are working with our counterparts in New Mexico to investigate what caused this error."

Beaumont said he'd been driving around with no clue that he could face the threat of being arrested.

"I could be arrested here if a cop pulls me over for failing to put my turn signal on," he explained.

There's a way for drivers all over the US to check the status of their licenses.

Using the MyDMV app only takes about 15 minutes to tell you whether it's valid or not.

When it comes to being pulled over for traffic violations, drivers handle it in different ways.

One woman congratulated a local traffic cop for winning a game after she avoided getting a ticket thanks to a helpful barista.

Lina from Kansas City, Missouri, posted about her experience on X, formerly Twitter, in which she said the parking cop's plan had been "foiled."
