A DRIVER had her car towed after employees claimed she didn't pay, even though she had proof on her phone.

Many cars were towed from a lot in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, and drivers are calling it predatory towing after a recent shooting in the area.

The tow truck crews claimed that the drivers didn't pay to park, according to local ABC affiliate WBMA.

However, Kiara Harris knew that she had paid and had the proof.

"I had paid $12.70," she told the outlet.

Harris showed the proof on her parking app explaining that her new car still had the dealer tag.

"For the park mobile app, I typed in dealer tag and in the notes put Tameron Honda," Harris explained.

Harris said she had no idea that having a dealer tag put her at risk of being towed.

The lot had posted a sign stating that it was a Tow Away Zone and that if you didn't pay to park, you'd be towed.

She believes there should have been a warning on the app if they won't accept your information.

"I will never park in one of these lots again," said Harris.

She will only be parking on the street at night, which is free and doesn't tow.

A lot manager told the outlet that they don't make money off towing someone's car and as long as a driver pays, they won't be towed.

MORE PARKING NIGHTMARES

The U.S. Sun has previously reported on many drivers who had their car towed including a man who returned from the grocery store to find his car gone.

"I parked on one side and went to the store on the other side," Shawn Godlang, of Dover, Delaware, told the local CBS affiliate WBOC-TV.

"I had to be driven out to the countryside to the tow place and pay a couple hundred dollars to get it back, and it was awful."

Godlang and other drivers have brought the towing issue to City Hall.

Lawmakers have proposed a bill that would require towing companies to accept credit card payments for car retrieval, allow drivers to recover their belongings after their car is towed, and limit the maximum fine drivers pay on towed cars.

Drivers were excited about this proposal because residents have argued that people keep important things in their cars and would need to get them before being towed.

However, local tow truck drivers were not happy about the possibility of a maximum fine.

"If you just cap it off at a certain price, who knows if they are going to pick up the cars," John Moss, a tow truck company owner, told the station.

"Nobody wants to keep the cars forever and ever because the lot fills up."

The law would require companies to be more transparent about tow prices and take photos of the vehicle before loading it onto the truck.
